Constitution Hill
Overlooking the City of Johannesburg is the Constitution Hill. Constitution Hill is a former prison that provides fascinating insight into South Africa's history. It is the sight of the Notorious Old Fort Prison complex, commonly known as NUMBER FOUR, where thousands of ordinary criminals and Political Prisoners were brutally punished before the dawn of Democracy in 1994. Most of South Africa's leading Political activists, including Mahatma Ghandi and Nelson Mandela were detained here. Nelson Mandela was imprisoned here before his Rivonia Trial in 1964.
Constitution Hill is the new home of the Constitutional Court. The old Awaiting Trial building has been transformed into the Constitutional Court of South Africa, a symbol of freedom, which works to protect the rights of the entire nation's people. The first court session in the new building at this location was held in February 2004. Guided tours of Constitutional Hill offer valuable insight into its rich history.
